Powers & Symbol
Zhongli Quan carries a broad banana-leaf fan that is said to revive the dead and turn ordinary stone into pure gold. A jovial, bare-bellied elder with a topknot and a fondness for wine, he commands fire and heat as comfortably as a smith commands his forge. His fan can also calm storms and extinguish raging flames with a single wave. In many accounts he is the teacher of Lü Dongbin, passing down the secrets of inner alchemy. He embodies the carefree sage who has transcended ambition yet keeps one foot in the human world, using his transformative powers to test, reward, or rescue mortals who cross his path. His laughter is said to shake mountains, and his wine flask is rarely empty.
The Legend
Zhongli Quan began life as a Han-dynasty general named Zhongli Jian, leading armies with courage and skill until a disastrous defeat left him wandering alone in the mountains. There he met an immortal hermit who showed him the arts of longevity and inner alchemy. After years of meditation in a remote cave, he attained enlightenment and cast off his military identity. One legend says he was tested by a dragon who offered wealth and power; he refused both, and the dragon revealed himself as a celestial messenger bearing the peach of immortality. Taking the name Quan, he joined the ranks of the Eight Immortals as their boisterous elder, forever bridging the worlds of court and cloud, a general who learned that true conquest is over the self.

In the Stories of the Eight Immortals
In stories of the Eight Immortals, Zhongli Quan is often portrayed as the good-natured elder and mentor who steadies the group with experience and humor. He appears when younger immortals need a wise word or a reminder not to take themselves too seriously. Filmmakers typically give him the broad gestures of a beloved uncle: booming laugh, bottomless wine cup, and a fan that solves problems with theatrical flair. He frequently serves as the bridge between Lü Dongbin's solemn heroism and the wilder personalities around him. When battle erupts, his fire powers and golden transformations provide spectacle, yet his deepest function is to embody the joy that true immortality should bring. Whether roasting a demon with a puff of flame or turning a pebble to gold to feed the hungry, he proves that wisdom need not be solemn.
