Powers & Symbol
Cao Guojiu carries a jade court tablet, the emblem of his former life as an imperial relative, which he transformed into a tool of judgment and protection. The tablet can clear false accusations, calm turbulent waters, and expose hidden corruption with a single tap. Dressed in the robes of a high official, he brings bureaucratic dignity to the otherwise ragtag band of immortals. His power lies in order, law, and moral authority; he understands both palace intrigue and heavenly justice. Though he joined the immortals late, his connections to the human court allow him to move between worlds, resolving problems that require rank as much as magic. The tablet also records the true names of demons, giving him a unique advantage when dark spirits hide behind disguises.
The Legend
Cao Guojiu was the brother of an imperial consort and enjoyed every privilege of the Tang court until he discovered that his own brother had abused power and committed terrible crimes. Ashamed of his family's conduct, he withdrew from court life and sought refuge in Taoist practice. In the mountains he met Zhongli Quan and Lü Dongbin, who tested his sincerity by asking why a man of rank would seek poverty. Cao replied that he sought only to wash away the stain of his family's wrongdoing. Satisfied, the immortals taught him the way of transcendence. He became the patron of actors and the embodiment of redemption through renunciation.
