Powers & Symbol

He Xiangu is the only female immortal among the Eight, a figure of purity and quiet strength who carries a lotus flower as her emblem. The lotus can grant longevity, cleanse poison, and illuminate hidden paths through darkness. She is often depicted as a graceful young woman in flowing robes, accompanied by a divine crane or surrounded by ethereal mist. Unlike the more flamboyant immortals, her power flows from discipline, chastity, and spiritual clarity. The lotus never touches mud yet rises clean, mirroring her path. She can communicate with birds, calm storms with a gesture, and appear in dreams to warn the virtuous of danger. She also possesses deep knowledge of herbal medicine, and many villagers credit her with cures that physicians could not achieve.

The Legend

He Xiangu was born He Qiong in the Tang dynasty. As a girl she received a dream in which a divine being told her to eat the powdered mother-of-pearl from a mussel shell; doing so, she found she no longer needed food and began to float above the ground. Her parents tried to arrange a marriage, but she refused, dedicating herself to a life of meditation and service. She withdrew to the mountains, where she perfected her spirit until the lotus became her constant companion. Villagers sought her for healing and prophecy, and tales of her purity spread until the other immortals recognized her as one of their own, the lotus-bearer among the Eight. Her hermitage became a sanctuary for women seeking healing and spiritual instruction.

In the Stories of the Eight Immortals

In stories of the Eight Immortals, He Xiangu is often portrayed as the serene, virtuous heart of the group, a healer and diplomat whose presence softens the sharper egos around her. She tends to the wounded, mediates disputes among the more stubborn immortals, and serves as a moral compass when power threatens to corrupt. Filmmakers usually dress her in white or pale colors, with lotus petals swirling around her whenever she uses magic. Though gentle, she is never helpless; her lotus can purify curses and shield allies from dark energy. Her restrained grace provides romantic tension with Lü Dongbin and a counterweight to the group's boisterous warriors. Her scenes often carry a quiet authority: when she speaks, even Lü Dongbin pauses to listen, recognizing purity that no sword can command.
